the love of God being poured out over all creation and animating all things so that they can have life and being in themselves. Without being watered continually by God’s love, each thing hardens, becomes static, fossilized, as Psalm 68:9 again has it: “Rain in abundance, O God, you did shed abroad; you did restore your heritage as it languished.” Even after Adam’s creation, that water has to continue irrigating his being and our own; otherwise it becomes “dehydrated” and hardens again into dust.
